Natural burial

My professional fee is £2500, which covers the essential logistics and administration, including the following:

  • bringing the person who’s died into my care until the day of the funeral

  • collecting someone from the place where they died on a weekday during working hours of 9am to 5pm (£250 extra if outside of these hours)

  • care in a mortuary before the funeral, for up to three weeks (£15 extra per day thereafter)

  • a meeting with your family to discuss all the options for the funeral, usually in person, with unlimited telephone/email/video calls after that, while we’re making plans

  • liaising with all parties involved, including natural burial grounds, hospital staff, venues and florists, as needed

  • washing and dressing the person who’s died – and supporting you to do this if you wish

  • a simple hearse to the funeral venue

  • four pallbearers to carry the coffin

There will be additional fees, which will vary depending on your decisions. These include:

  • a plot at a natural burial ground
Clandon Wood, Surrey – from £3760
South Downs Natural Burial Ground – from £4261

  • a biodegradable coffin or casket – from around £400

  • a celebrant, if you wish to use one – usually £250-350

Please note: my own celebrancy fee starts at £300 to write and deliver a eulogy, give guidance on readings and music, and generally support everyone speaking or reading on the day; the cost rises for a more involved ceremony including elements of ritual, which we can discuss. You are very welcome to choose another celebrant, and you don’t have to use one at all – ceremonies led by families are very powerful, and I can give guidance.

Other optional items and services to consider include venue hire, flowers, refreshments, musicians and professional live-streaming on the day. Once we’ve had a meeting, I’ll provide a detailed estimate.

I offer a free, no-obligation initial chat to help you work out what you’re looking for – and if I’m not the right person to help you, or I don’t have capacity, I will be able to recommend others. Please contact me to discuss your needs.

Celebrancy

You can involve me as a celebrant/ceremonialist whether or not I’m looking after the funeral arrangements. I’ll work closely with you to create a special tribute to your loved one. My starting fee is £300, which covers:

  • a meeting (in person if possible, or by video call) to talk about your loved one and plan a simple ceremony of up to 40 minutes

  • writing a tribute (eulogy), including liaising with you on edits and additions

  • guidance to help you think about music and readings for your loved one, if desired

  • holding the ceremony on the day (plus travel costs outside the Greater London area)

I specialise in holding bespoke ceremonies and celebrations with a difference, including nature-based rituals to support grieving and bring a sense of magic. These types of event are usually held in alternative spaces that allow more time than the typical crematorium – from beaches and woodland to beautiful venues. I’m open to all your ideas and will work closely with you to create a bespoke celebration. Once we’ve discussed your wishes, I will draw up a proposal with an estimate.
